Traditional SAR operations depend on crew endurance

Traditional maritime SAR operations are very dependent of a ship’s tight crew and their ability to stay alert and focused during the search that often lasts for hours.

The weather is often less than favorable, the overview of the sea from the deck of a ship is limited and the manual search is both monotonous and exhausting.

The ship’s crew will under such demanding conditions suffer from fatigue over time which inevitably leads to reduced attention.

SmartSAR has made it to the TOP 10 out of 190 submissions, 346 registered teams and 470 registered applicants!

The aim of the contest is to design, develop, test and prepare for commercial launch a drone-based application and/or service able to provide a position and/or time fix by using Galileo-enabled receiver.

The European GNSS is a key enabling technology for drones, robust positioning and precise timing and synchronization capabilities offered by Galileo and EGNOS are real added values that facilitate the integration of drones into non-segregated airspace and the U-space.
